Pengertian Subordinating Conjunctions

Subordinating Conjunctions digunakan untuk menggabungkan anak kalimat dengan induk kalimatnya dan biasanya berada di awal anak kalimat. Seperti: after, although, as because, before, how, if, once, since, than, that, though, till, until, when, where, whether, while, etc.

Contoh:

INDUK KALIMAT	ANAK KALIMAT
Brian go swimming	although	It is raining.

Anak kalimat selalu berada setelah induk kalimatnya, namun kadang-kadang, anak kalimat berada di awal kalimat atau di depan induk kalimatnya. Silahkan perhatikan contoh di bawah ini:

Kimmy go swimming although it is raining.

Although it is raining, Kimmy go swimming.

Selain itu, subordinating conjunctions juga merupakan jenis conjunctions (kata penghubung) berupa kata-kata yang memperkenalkan adverb clauses. Perhatikan contoh kalimat di bawah ini:

When we were in New York, we saw several plays.

We saw several plays when we were in New York.

Pada contoh kalimat pertama di atas, frase “when we were in New York” adalah adverb clauses. Frase tersebut merupakan dependent clause (klausa tidak bebas) yang tidak dapat berdiri sendiri sebagai sebuah kalimat. Frase tersebut harus dihubungkan/ di gabungkan dengan independent clause (klausa bebas). Contoh lainnya:

Because he was sleepy, he went to bed.

He went to bed because he was sleepy.

Kata “because” di atas menerangkan adverb clause. Frase “because he was sleepy” adalah adverb clause. Silahkan perhatikan tabel di bawah ini mengetahui contoh subordinating conjunctions (kata-kata yang mengenalkan adverb clauses).

Contoh kalimat menggunakan Subordinating Conjunctions

She got a job after she had graduated.

I will leave before he comes.

He had already left when I got there.

It began to rain while I was walking home.

It began to rain as I was walking home.

We had already left by the time he arrived.

I haven’t seen him since he left this morning.

We stayed there until we finished our work.

I will never speak to him again as long as I live.

I will never speak to him again so long as I live.

I say hello whenever I see her.

The first time I went to New York, I went to an opera.

I saw two plays the last time I went to New York.

I’m going to see a ballet the next time I go to New York.

He decided not to go to the concert since he is not interested in classical music.

I turned off the TV so that my roommate could study in peace and quiet.

The possibilities for peace are still remote inasmuch as the two government leaders could not reach an agreement.
